Knights of Columbus

Vestibule

Or

Gathering Space

This part of the church is called the Vestibule or the Gathering Space.  You may have even heard it called the narthex.  No matter what you have heard this space called, it is the space between the outside of the church and the main section where Mass is celebrated.  When people enter the church, they prepare themselves to receive Jesus at Mass.  When they leave Mass, they prepare to bring the light of Christ to others.  For these reasons, the gathering space is an important part of the church.

Holy Water Fonts

The holy water fonts are placed at either side of the entrance doors.  People bless themselves with holy water when they enter and leave the church as a sign of their own baptism.  They dip their hand in the water and mark themselves anew with that sign in which they were baptized – the sign of the cross.  We all belong to God’s family through our baptism.
